Botox

Botox is a great treatment for wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Dr. Grau and Amy Hughes, P.A. both have years of experience with Botox. Their goal is to provide a natural, relaxed result that enhances your appearance that does not drastically change it.  Botox may be for you if you are looking for a simple, quick, and virtually painless procedure to smooth out wrinkles on your upper face.

What is the procedure like?

It is a simple 10 minute visit with a few tiny injections.

Which wrinkles are treated with Botox?

Botox is typically used to treat forehead wrinkles, Crow's feet, and the frown lines between the eyebrows.

Is it painful?

The injections feel like a mosquito bite. The discomfort is minimal and temporary.

Will I need anesthesia?

No.  Everyone tolerates the injections very well, even those who don’t like needles.

Is it safe?

Botox has been FDA approved and used for other treatments in the U.S. for 20 years. Botox is a natural purified protein that is injected into specific muscles at very low doses. The effects are confined to the treated area.

Can I get pregnant while doing Botox?

You should not have treatments if you are currently pregnant. However, there is no reason that you cannot get pregnant after you have had a treatment.

Do I need to take time off to recuperate?

No. Most patients go right back to work or continue their activities immediately after. The injections are barely noticeable 10-15 minutes after the treatment. You can apply makeup immediately in the area after a treatment.

When will I see results?

Results begin to appear within 3-5 days.  The muscle gradually relaxes over several days and may take up to 2 weeks to fully develop.

How long does it last?

3-4 Months for most patients. When Botox wears off, your wrinkles gradually reappear. Most patients need 3 injections per year, but some individuals last longer.

I have heard that the wrinkles look worse after the Botox wears off.  Is this true?

This is NOT TRUE at all. Your wrinkles will slowly return to their normal condition after 3-4 months. If you continue with regular Botox treatments, the treated muscles become weaker since they are not being used (like flabby arms). This is a good thing for your face, since it is strong muscles that cause the wrinkles. If you stick with treatments, the resting wrinkles typically become less noticeable with time, and you will continue to look better and better.

Are there any side effects?

Most people have no problems. Occasionally, some may have slight bruising at the injection sites. This is temporary and can be covered with makeup. Some may have a slight headache for a day. If the forehead is treated, there is a very slight risk of temporary eyelid droop. This is typically not noticeable to others and only lasts a few weeks.

Who performs the Botox?

Dr. Grau and Amy Hughes, P.A.

Are Dr. Grau and Amy Hughes, P.A. experienced with Botox?

Yes, they are both extremely experienced. Dr. Grau and Amy Hughes have had extensive training on Botox.

Chemical Peel (TCA)

What are chemical peels used for?

  • Blotchy skin (brown patches) from  sun damage and melasma (pregnancy mask)
  • Acne and blackheads
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Very mild acne scarring
  • Rough skin texture from sun damage and age

How does it work?

Chemical peels are performed by applying an acid solution to the skin, which promotes the shedding of the damaged surface of the skin. This allows a fresh new layer of younger, healthier skin to emerge.

What type of peel do you perform?

Dr. Grau performs the TCA (trichloracetic acid) peel.  This type of peel is good for mild scarring, fine wrinkles and sun-damage.  Saints Dermatology uses 15%, 25%, and 35% TCA, depending on the patient.

How many peels will I need?

It all depends on the type and severity of your skin condition. Some people are satisfied with one peel, but most require at least 3 peels, and sometimes up to 6.

How often can I repeat the peels?

TCA peels can be repeated every 4-6 weeks.

Are there any side effects?

The greatest risk with chemical peels is the development of brown patches. This occurs if you do not avoid the sun while your skin is healing after the peel. You MUST wear sunscreen and strictly avoid the sun on your face at all times if you plan on having a chemical peel.
